A safer landing for Utah play areas.
Utah child-care rules take fall protection seriously. Utah Admin. Code R381-100-19 bars stationary play equipment from a hard surface — concrete, asphalt, dirt, or the bare floor. Swings, slides, and climbers need a real cushioning surface under them, and the same rule accepts rubber among the protective surfaces.
Our play nuggets meet that rule. They carry IPEMA certification to ASTM F1292, the national standard that measures how well a surface softens a fall. The color coating has no effect on that rating.
Rules and inspections vary by facility. Confirm the required depth and fall zones with your licensing consultant before you order.

How deep does the mulch need to be?
Home & backyardUpdated July 2026
| Where it’s going | Depth | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Home & backyard playsets | 3″ | Right for most home swing sets and play structures. Home playgrounds aren’t government-regulated — this is the standard recommendation. |
| Taller home playsets | 4″ | A little extra cushion for a taller backyard structure. |
| Landscaping & garden beds | 2″ | Blocks weeds and holds soil moisture — a landscaping depth, not a safety depth. |
Home guidance follows the CPSC’s voluntary Home Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 324). Backyard playgrounds carry no federal depth requirement.
Schools, parks, daycares & commercial — by equipment fall heightUpdated July 2026

|---|---|---|
| Up to 10 ft | 4″ | Certified critical fall height: 10 ft |
| Up to 12 ft | 5″ | Certified critical fall height: 12 ft |
| Up to 16 ftCovers the tallest commercial play towers. | 6″ | Certified critical fall height: 16 ft |
Certified thickness-to-fall-height ratios for the IPEMA-certified recycled-rubber nugget mulch we ship, tested to ASTM F1292-22 and F3012-22. Public playgrounds follow the U.S. CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 325). Loose fill settles when rolled, so spread about an inch over the target depth. Figures reviewed July 2026.
Made to last through a full Utah year.
NOAA's Utah climate summary puts it plainly: "Most of Utah is quite dry because the Sierra Nevada and the Rocky Mountains block moisture from the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, respectively." The populated valleys get hot, dry summers, intense high-elevation sun, and cold freeze-thaw winters.
That is a hard climate for wood and bark mulch. In dry, windy conditions organic mulch bleaches in the sun, dries out, and blows or washes off the bed. It rots down over a season or two, so you buy it again almost every year.
In shaded, irrigated corners that same damp wood draws termites and grows fungus. Rubber mulch holds its color, feeds neither insects nor fungus, and weighs enough to stay put in the wind. That is why we back the color with a 12-year color guarantee.
One honest note: no loose mulch is bolted down. A hard downpour or strong Wasatch wind can shift any surface material, rubber included. Rubber's weight simply means it moves far less than lightweight wood chips.

Rubber mulch also earns its place in Utah's water-wise landscapes. Utah State University Extension recommends tough native plants like Utah serviceberry (Amelanchier utahensis), crispleaf buckwheat (Eriogonum corymbosum), Munro's globemallow (Sphaeralcea munroana), and pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) for low-water Utah gardens.
Rubber mulch holds a crisp, even border around those plantings. It handles a summer storm better than wood and does not break down into the soil, so your beds keep their clean line with almost no upkeep. Brown, red (a deep redwood tone), black, and unpainted all suit a natural Utah landscape.

Six shades for Utah play areas, yards, and gardens.
Every Utah setting — play areas, front-yard beds, and native borders — has a shade that fits. Each color reads true and holds its tone under our 12-year guarantee, season after season.

A deep brown that looks like a fresh load of wood chips. It holds that color under a 12-year guarantee, while wood grays and washes away. It sits easily beside brick, fencing, and green lawns, and works just as well under a backyard playset.

A warm, deep redwood tone — the color kids head straight for on a playground, with a soft landing underfoot. In a landscape bed it stands out against gray stone, brick, and greenery, and it pairs handsomely with green play sets.

Good questions, clear answers.
What does a pallet cost, delivered to Utah?
A single pallet delivered in Utah runs for unpainted rubber mulch up to $709 for the colors, with freight already included in the price. Each pallet holds 75 cubic feet — enough for a good-sized play area or landscape bed. You can buy up to 9 pallets online at your exact Utah delivered price; for 6 or more, ask us for a freight quote.
Does rubber mulch hold up in Utah's climate?
Yes. Utah's dry, sunny, windy valleys are exactly where wood mulch fails fastest — it fades, blows around, and rots down within a year or two. Rubber mulch holds its color, doesn't rot like wood, and is heavy enough to resist wind, and we back the color with a 12-year color guarantee. Per NOAA, most of Utah is 'quite dry,' with hot summers and freeze-thaw winters — conditions rubber handles far better than bark.
Is rubber mulch allowed under playground equipment in Utah?
Yes. Utah Admin. Code R381-100-19 bars stationary play equipment from sitting on hard surfaces like concrete, asphalt, dirt, and the bare floor, and lists shredded rubber among the accepted cushioning surfaces. Our play nuggets are IPEMA-certified to ASTM F1292. Always confirm the required depth and fall zones with your licensing consultant before ordering.
Why choose rubber mulch instead of wood in Utah?
Two Utah-specific reasons. First, the dry, windy, high-UV valleys bleach and scatter wood mulch and rot it down, so you re-mulch almost every year; rubber holds its color and weight. Second, in irrigated shade, damp wood can draw termites and grow fungus — rubber is inorganic, so it feeds neither. NOAA notes most of the state is 'quite dry.
In short, rubber is a buy-once surface where wood is a buy-again one.
Does rubber mulch work with Utah native plants?
Yes. It makes a clean, low-water border around the natives that Utah State University Extension recommends — Utah serviceberry, crispleaf buckwheat, Munro's globemallow, and pinyon pine. Rubber stays in place better than wood and doesn't break down into the soil, so it keeps its edge with little upkeep and pairs naturally with xeriscaping.
Do you deliver across Utah?
Yes — statewide, and to the 48 contiguous states. We run Utah's main corridors: I-15 from Salt Lake City to St. George, plus I-80, I-70, I-84, and the I-215 loop.
The truck sets your pallet at the curb, typically within 5–10 business days. Salt Lake City, Provo, Ogden, St. George, and every town between are all served.
