Rubber mulch in Kentucky, in short

We deliver recycled rubber mulch to every Kentucky address — Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, Owensboro, and Covington included. We ship by the pallet: 75 cubic feet, about what a truck can bring to your curb. The price includes freight.

  • Made in Kentucky: the rubber mulch we deliver here comes from a Kentucky plant, so it travels a shorter distance to your site.
  • Play-ready: It works two ways. Under swings and slides, our unpainted nugget mulch meets the ASTM F1292 playground safety standard through IPEMA certification, so it cushions falls. In beds and borders, it lays a clean edge that will not rot or fade.
  • Built for Kentucky's climate: Kentucky's warm, humid summers and steady rain keep wood mulch damp. That damp feeds fungus and termites, but rubber cannot rot like wood or feed either one.
  • Buy right here: Buy up to nine pallets online, or ask for a quote on six or more. Every order carries a 12-year color guarantee, and all sales are final.

Certified for play

A safer landing for Kentucky play areas.

Under play equipment, our unpainted rubber nuggets meet the ASTM F1292 standard for playground surfacing through IPEMA certification. That cushions the kind of falls that happen off swings and slides.

Kentucky's licensed child-care rules back this up. Under 922 KAR 2:120, outdoor climbing, swinging, and sliding equipment needs a protective surface. That surface must carry a fall zone equal to the height of the equipment.

The rule defines that protective surface as "loose surfacing material not installed over concrete." Loose rubber mulch meets that requirement cleanly. It spreads deep, stays springy in the cold, and does not pack down the way wood chips do.

Blue and green read as play space at a glance. They read as play surfaces and hide scuffs well. We deliver the mulch to your site; you or your installer spread it.

Before you finalize a public or licensed play area, confirm the depth and layout with your child-care licensing consultant.

How deep does the mulch need to be?

Home & backyardUpdated July 2026

Where it’s goingDepthNotes
Home & backyard playsets3″Right for most home swing sets and play structures. Home playgrounds aren’t government-regulated — this is the standard recommendation.
Taller home playsets4″A little extra cushion for a taller backyard structure.
Landscaping & garden beds2″Blocks weeds and holds soil moisture — a landscaping depth, not a safety depth.

Home guidance follows the CPSC’s voluntary Home Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 324). Backyard playgrounds carry no federal depth requirement.

Certified thickness-to-fall-height ratios for the IPEMA-certified recycled-rubber nugget mulch we ship, tested to ASTM F1292-22 and F3012-22. Public playgrounds follow the U.S. CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 325). Loose fill settles when rolled, so spread about an inch over the target depth. Figures reviewed July 2026.

Why these depths look lower than the “12 inches” you may have seen: the CPSC lists a generic 9–12″ minimum for loose fills like wood chips and sand because they compress and scatter. Rubber nuggets don’t compress the same way, so under ASTM F3012 they earn a certified fall-height rating at a shallower depth.
Kentucky weather, built for it

Made to last through a full Kentucky year.

Kentucky's weather makes the case for rubber. As the NOAA NCEI State Climate Summary for Kentucky puts it, "Kentucky's climate is characterized by moderately large variations in temperature and abundant precipitation."

Wood and bark mulch struggle in that climate. Heat, humidity, and steady rain keep organic mulch damp for long stretches. Those are the conditions that feed artillery, or "shotgun," fungus.

Artillery fungus grows on rotting wood mulch. It blasts sticky black spores up to 20 feet onto siding and parked cars, where they are nearly impossible to remove. The same damp, decaying wood also draws termites (Penn State Extension; NOAA NCEI).

Recycled rubber mulch cannot rot like wood or feed fungi, and it gives termites no food source. It sidesteps both problems.

Rubber mulch also keeps its color. Our 12-year color guarantee holds the deep browns, reds, and playground blues and greens true through Kentucky summers.

One honest note: nothing holds loose mulch down on its own. A heavy downpour or high wind can move any loose material, rubber or wood. On slopes and exposed spots, plan an edge to hold it in place.

Recycled rubber sheds water instead of soaking it up, so it doesn’t rot down the way wood mulch does.

“Summers vary from warm to hot and humid, while winters are cool with occasional episodes of very cold arctic air.”

Kentucky native plants

A clean frame for Kentucky’s native garden.

Rubber mulch also frames a Kentucky native bed cleanly. Set it around plants like Spicebush (Lindera benzoin), Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica), Common Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis), and Blue False Indigo (Baptisia australis). It holds a crisp border that will not break down or need topping off each spring.

These are all species the University of Kentucky Nursery Crop Extension lists among natives with landscape potential. Unpainted rubber reads closest to bark for a natural look; deep redwood-toned Red pairs well with green foliage.

Common questions

Good questions, clear answers.

How much does rubber mulch cost delivered in Kentucky?

A single pallet delivered in Kentucky runs for unpainted rubber mulch up to $709 for the colors, with freight already included in the price. Each pallet holds 75 cubic feet — enough for a good-sized play area or landscape bed. You can buy up to 9 pallets online at your exact Kentucky delivered price; for 6 or more, ask us for a freight quote.

Does rubber mulch hold up in Kentucky's humid, rainy climate?

Yes. The NOAA NCEI climate summary describes Kentucky summers as warm to hot and humid, with abundant precipitation year-round. That damp keeps wood mulch soggy, but recycled rubber cannot rot or soak through. It holds its color under our 12-year guarantee, and no loose mulch stays put in a downpour, so edge sloped areas.

Is rubber mulch allowed under playground equipment at a Kentucky daycare?

It can be. Kentucky's child-care regulation 922 KAR 2:120 requires a protective surface under climbing, swinging, and sliding equipment, with a fall zone as tall as the equipment. It defines that surface as loose material, never installed over concrete, and our unpainted nuggets carry IPEMA certification to ASTM F1292. Confirm depth and layout with your licensing consultant before a licensed install.

Why choose rubber mulch over wood mulch here?

Kentucky's hot, humid summers and steady rain keep wood mulch damp. That damp feeds artillery fungus, which shoots sticky black spores up to 20 feet onto siding and cars, and it draws termites to rotting wood. Rubber cannot rot like wood or feed fungus, and it gives termites nothing to eat, so it avoids both problems (sources: NOAA NCEI; Gardening Know How).

Does rubber mulch work with Kentucky native plants?

Yes. It makes a clean, lasting border around Kentucky natives such as Spicebush, Black Gum, Common Buttonbush, and Blue False Indigo. The University of Kentucky Nursery Crop Extension lists all four among natives with landscape potential. Unpainted rubber looks closest to bark, and deep redwood-toned Red sets off green foliage.

Do you deliver across Kentucky?

Yes, statewide. We ship by the pallet on freight carriers along I-65, I-64, I-75, I-71, I-24, and I-69. Those corridors reach Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, Owensboro, Covington, Georgetown, Richmond, Florence, Hopkinsville, Nicholasville, and every town between.
