Certified for play

A safer landing for Ohio play areas.

For play areas, our rubber mulch nuggets carry IPEMA certification to ASTM F1292 — the national standard for how well a surface softens a fall. Under swings, slides, and climbers, that cushioning does the real work. It's why so many Ohio schools, daycares, and backyards choose rubber over bare ground.

Ohio's child care rule, Ohio Administrative Code 5101:2-12-11, is blunt. It bars play equipment set "directly over concrete, asphalt, blacktop, dirt, rocks, grass or any other hard surface." It also requires climbing, swinging, and sliding equipment to have "a fall zone of protective resilient material."

The rule lists mulch and wood chips among the acceptable materials, and says that list is "not limited to" those. Licensed centers carry specific depth and fall-zone duties, so confirm your plan with your licensing consultant before you order.

How deep does the mulch need to be?

Home & backyardUpdated July 2026

Where it’s goingDepthNotes
Home & backyard playsets3″Right for most home swing sets and play structures. Home playgrounds aren’t government-regulated — this is the standard recommendation.
Taller home playsets4″A little extra cushion for a taller backyard structure.
Landscaping & garden beds2″Blocks weeds and holds soil moisture — a landscaping depth, not a safety depth.

Home guidance follows the CPSC’s voluntary Home Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 324). Backyard playgrounds carry no federal depth requirement.

Certified thickness-to-fall-height ratios for the IPEMA-certified recycled-rubber nugget mulch we ship, tested to ASTM F1292-22 and F3012-22. Public playgrounds follow the U.S. CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 325). Loose fill settles when rolled, so spread about an inch over the target depth. Figures reviewed July 2026.

Why these depths look lower than the “12 inches” you may have seen: the CPSC lists a generic 9–12″ minimum for loose fills like wood chips and sand because they compress and scatter. Rubber nuggets don’t compress the same way, so under ASTM F3012 they earn a certified fall-height rating at a shallower depth.
Ohio weather, built for it

Made to last through a full Ohio year.

Ohio is hard on wood. The NOAA NCEI State Climate Summary for Ohio describes a state open to "very cold air masses from the Arctic in the winter" and humid Gulf air in summer. Rainfall has climbed since the mid-1990s, so organic mulch spends much of the year damp.

Damp wood and bark mulch feeds artillery fungus (Sphaerobolus). A four-year Pennsylvania State University study found that moisture-holding wood and shredded-bark blends grow far more of this fungus than dry material. The fungus then shoots sticky, tar-like black spores onto siding, cars, and playsets that resist removal.

Penn State Extension is blunt: no reliable cure exists other than keeping wood and bark mulch away from buildings. That same wet wood invites termites and breaks down, so it needs topping off every year or two.

Rubber mulch can't rot like wood, feed fungi, or feed termites, so it sidesteps those problems. A 12-year guarantee covers its color, not the one-season fade you get from wood.

No loose mulch is weatherproof. A hard downpour or high wind can shift any surface material. So edge exposed beds, and check fall zones after big Ohio storms.

Recycled rubber sheds water instead of soaking it up, so it doesn’t rot down the way wood mulch does.

Ohio native plants

A clean frame for Ohio’s native garden.

Rubber mulch also frames an Ohio native garden cleanly, with little upkeep. Because it doesn't break down like wood, it holds a crisp border year after year. Set it around shrubs that already belong here — Red-osier Dogwood (Cornus sericea), American Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis), Spicebush (Lindera benzoin), and Winterberry Holly (Ilex verticillata).

Ohio State University Extension's "Native Shrubs" guide (HYG-5813) recommends all four for supporting birds, butterflies, bees, and other beneficial wildlife. Set the plants first, then spread rubber mulch around them. You get an edge that stays neat without yearly re-mulching.

Brown $709/pallet

Common questions

Good questions, clear answers.

How much does rubber mulch cost delivered in Ohio?

A single pallet delivered in Ohio runs for unpainted mulch up to $719 for the colors, freight included. Each pallet holds 75 cubic feet — enough for a good-sized play area or landscape bed. Buy up to 9 pallets online at your exact Ohio delivered price; for 6 or more, ask us for a freight quote.

Does rubber mulch hold up in Ohio's climate?

Yes. Ohio swings from Arctic winter cold to humid Gulf summers, per the NOAA NCEI State Climate Summary, with rainfall rising since the mid-1990s. Rubber mulch doesn't rot, mat down, or decompose in that wet-then-frozen cycle the way wood does, and a 12-year guarantee covers its color. One honest note: a hard downpour or high wind can move any loose mulch, so edge exposed beds.

Is rubber mulch allowed under playground equipment in Ohio?

Ohio Administrative Code 5101:2-12-11 requires a fall zone of "protective resilient material" under play equipment, and lists mulch and wood chips among the acceptable materials. Our nuggets carry IPEMA certification to the ASTM F1292 safety standard. Because licensed centers follow specific depth rules, confirm your setup with your licensing consultant.

Why choose rubber mulch over wood mulch in Ohio?

Ohio's humid, rainy weather keeps wood and bark mulch damp — the conditions a four-year Penn State University study tied to artillery fungus. That fungus flings sticky black spores onto siding, cars, and playsets that are hard to remove. Damp wood also draws termites and breaks down every year or two, while rubber mulch can't rot, feed fungi, or feed termites.

Does rubber mulch work with Ohio native plants?

It works well as a border around them. Ohio State University Extension's "Native Shrubs" guide (HYG-5813) recommends Red-osier Dogwood, American Elderberry, Spicebush, and Winterberry Holly to support local birds, bees, and butterflies year-round. Plant those first, then spread rubber mulch around them for a clean edge that skips yearly re-mulching.

Do you deliver rubber mulch across Ohio?

Yes — statewide, and to the 48 contiguous states. Freight runs Ohio's main routes — I-70, I-71, I-75, I-77, and the Ohio Turnpike — and reaches Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, and beyond within 5–10 business days. Each pallet holds 75 cubic feet, and the truck sets it at your curb —
