Playground depth depends on your tallest equipment's fall height. Backyard play sets are commonly 3″ (4″ for taller ones); commercial and school playgrounds are typically 6″. We'll confirm your spec to ASTM F1292. See fall-height depths in the handbook →

Nothing added — just clean, recycled rubber.
Unpainted mulch arrives exactly as it's made: cleaned, recycled U.S. tire-rubber nuggets with no color coating. It cushions a fall like our painted colors and lasts as long — at the lowest price per pallet we sell.

Same certified protection, minus the pigment.
Unpainted uses the same recycled tire-rubber nuggets as our painted colors — it just skips the color coating. That drops the price to the lowest per pallet we sell. All six colors carry the same IPEMA-certified, ASTM F1292 fall protection, so safety never rides on the color you pick.
A playground needs a lot of mulch. Fall protection calls for a deep layer — about 6 inches under equipment — so the volume adds up fast. When the color underfoot isn't the point, unpainted puts every dollar into certified cushioning instead of pigment.
Want color in the mulch itself? Every painted option carries the identical ASTM F1292 protection, so choose the look you want and give up nothing underfoot.
What it looks like
Unpainted comes from recycled tires, with no pigment and no coating — dark, with a speckled surface. There's nothing on it to fade or re-coat, so it won't gray out the way wood mulch does, and it reads clean across a play area.
A note on heat
Dark surfaces absorb more sun, so unpainted runs warmer than a light color on a hot, full-sun afternoon — the same physics as dark pavement. Two easy fixes: plan for shade and keep to the recommended depth. Our safety guide has the temperature details.
Sources & verification. IPEMA certifies this mulch to ASTM F1292 for impact attenuation, and lists it in the public IPEMA registry. The EPA, the European Chemicals Agency, California OEHHA and Washington's health department have all studied recycled rubber. Their findings support safe use — read the full studies on our Is rubber mulch safe? page.
~80–100 tires per pallet: each pallet is recycled scrap tire, and the EPA puts a passenger tire at about 20–25 lb. Outlasts wood, no fungus: rubber is inorganic and doesn't break down like wood, so it can't host the artillery fungus that a four-year Penn State study documented on wet wood mulch.
Nothing to fade: unpainted carries no added pigment, so no dye can fade — it keeps its natural recycled-rubber color. Our 12-year color guarantee applies to the painted colors. Last verified July 2026.
Sold by the pallet — 75 cubic feet · 50 bags · about 2–3″ deep for landscaping beds, 6″ for playground fall protection.
Certified safety and real value, underfoot.
Unpainted earns its keep on function and price. Here's where it makes the most sense:
Playgrounds and play areas
Schools, daycares, churches, HOAs, parks, backyard playsets — anywhere the fall protection matters more than the color. It brings the same ASTM F1292 cushioning as every painted color, for the lowest price per pallet we sell.
Economical fill and coverage
It also makes economical fill — large areas, slopes, drainage edges, dog runs, pathways — wherever rubber's durability counts at the lowest cost per square foot.
Looking for a decorative color?
Want the mulch itself to add color — a bed by the house, a front walkway? Our brown, red, and black carry the same certified protection with a finished look.

How deep for a playground?
Home & backyardUpdated July 2026
| Where it’s going | Depth | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Home & backyard playsets | 3″ | Right for most home swing sets and play structures. Home playgrounds aren’t government-regulated — this is the standard recommendation. |
| Taller home playsets | 4″ | A little extra cushion for a taller backyard structure. |
| Landscaping & garden beds | 2″ | Blocks weeds and holds soil moisture — a landscaping depth, not a safety depth. |
Home guidance follows the CPSC’s voluntary Home Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 324). Backyard playgrounds carry no federal depth requirement.
Putting it under playground equipment? Commercial depths are set by the height a child can fall from. See the full fall-height table, or the Playground Safety Handbook.
Rubber mulch vs. the alternatives
How it comparesUpdated July 2026
| Surface | Fall protection | How long it lasts | You re-buy it? | Upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rubber mulch | 16 ft at 6″ | Decades — doesn't decompose | No — bought once | Rake level; top up ~10% for settling |
| Wood mulch (engineered wood fiber) | 7–10 ft at 9″ | Compresses 25%+; decomposes | Yes — to hold the 9″ depth | Rake back after use; add material to stay at 9″ |
| Poured-in-place | 12 ft when new | Hardens and cracks | Re-seal, recurring | Pro re-seal every 2–3 yrs |
Rubber fall height from our IPEMA certification (ASTM F1292-22); wood and engineered wood fiber per U.S. CPSC Pub. 325, Table 2. A pallet of rubber costs more up front than a bag of wood — but you buy it once. Your exact delivered price is in the calculator above.
Unpainted rubber mulch — answered.
Why do so many schools and daycares choose unpainted?
Cost at scale. A play area needs a deep layer — about 6 inches under equipment for fall protection — so the volume runs large. Unpainted brings the exact same IPEMA-certified, ASTM F1292 cushioning as our painted colors, without paying for pigment nobody sees under a slide. For a budget-minded school, church, or parks department, that adds up to real savings.
Is unpainted rubber mulch safe for playgrounds?
Yes. It's IPEMA-certified to ASTM F1292, the impact standard in the CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook. Protection comes from the tested surface at the right depth — not the color — so lay it 6 inches deep under play equipment.
It's clean, uncolored recycled rubber with no coating. See the full evidence on our Is rubber mulch safe? page.
What color is unpainted, and will it fade?
None — we add no pigment. It comes from recycled tires, dark with a speckled surface. With no pigment or coating, there's nothing to fade or re-coat, and it won't gray out the way wood mulch does.
Does unpainted get warm in the sun?
Unpainted is a dark surface, so like any dark surface it absorbs more heat and can feel warm in full afternoon sun. In sunny spots, plan for shade and keep to the recommended depth. Our safety guide covers surface temperature.
Should I use unpainted for landscaping beds?
For a decorative bed, we'd point you to a painted color — the finish is what you're paying for. Unpainted earns its place where function beats looks: under playsets, and as economical fill for big areas, slopes, or drainage. Want a bark-brown look instead? See brown.
How much unpainted rubber mulch do I need?
One pallet covers 75 cubic feet — about a 30 × 15 ft area at 2 inches deep, or roughly 150 sq ft at a 6-inch playground depth. Quickest way to size it: use the calculator above — enter length, width, and depth for an exact pallet count. For the full tool, see the mulch calculator.
