The basics

Start here
What is rubber mulch, exactly?

It's a long-lasting ground cover made from recycled tires — cleaned, stripped of steel and most fiber, and sized into nuggets. Colored nuggets carry a UV-stable coating tested to ASTM F3012 material-purity limits.

Each pallet keeps roughly 80–100 scrap tires out of a landfill. Unlike wood, it doesn't decompose, so it never rots, breaks down into dirt, or needs replacing every spring.

What colors does it come in?

Six colors: brown, red, black, unpainted, blue and green. A 12-year color guarantee covers every painted color. See all six colors.

Is it really worth it compared to wood mulch?

Over time, yes. Wood mulch costs less to buy once. But it fades to gray, rots, and needs replacing every year or two.

Rubber holds its color for a guaranteed 12 years and stays put through heavy rain. You pay more up front and far less over the next decade. The handbook has the full 10-year cost breakdown.

Is it really recycled and eco-friendly?

Yes — it's made from end-of-life tires. The United States generates about 264 million scrap tires a year (U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, 2023).

Certified rubber surfacing is a recognized beneficial use for those tires. Each pallet diverts about 80–100 of them. We plant a tree for every pallet you order.

Is it safe?

The safety record
Is rubber mulch safe for kids?

Schools and parks choose it as their certified playground surface. It's IPEMA-certified and ASTM F1292 fall-height tested to cushion falls, and it meets ASTM F3012 for loose-fill rubber material. The EPA/CDC, the European Chemicals Agency, and California's OEHHA have studied it for years.

Our Is Rubber Mulch Safe? page links every original agency and journal.

Is it safe for dogs and pets?

It's a popular choice for dog runs and kennels. Because it's non-porous, it dries fast instead of staying damp like wood. Wet bark grows mold, but rubber never stays damp that long — and it hoses clean.

It's inert and splinter-free. As with any ground cover, keep a puppy from making a habit of chewing and swallowing chunks.

Will it hurt my plants or my soil?

For ornamental beds — shrubs, perennials, trees, borders — it works like any mulch. It holds moisture and blocks weeds without rotting. One difference from wood: it doesn't break down, so it adds no organic matter to your soil.

Independent leachate testing finds that in soil, essentially only zinc leaches in any meaningful amount. Zinc feeds plants and poses no danger to people. In high amounts it can affect sensitive plants, so for a vegetable garden or a delicate bed, lay a simple barrier underneath first.

Does it grow mold or fungus like wood mulch?

No. Damp wood and bark mulch host fungi — including "artillery fungus". Penn State Extension reports it thrives on damp, decomposing wood mulch, then fires staining spores several feet onto siding and cars.

Because rubber doesn't decompose like wood or absorb water, it gives mold and fungi nothing to feed on.

Does it get hot in the sun?

Yes — in direct summer sun, like any dark surface, from a metal slide to bare concrete. Darker colors warm up the most; shade over the area and a lighter color keep it comfortable. In shade or the cooler months, it's a non-issue.

How it holds up

Lifespan & depth
How long does it last?

Years longer than wood. It doesn't break down like wood or compact, so a bed or play area goes many years before it needs more than a minor top-off.

A 12-year guarantee covers the color. We'll never claim it lasts "forever" — but it outlasts wood many times over.

Does the color fade?

Far slower than wood, which grays in a single season. A 12-year color guarantee covers every painted color. We won't say it "never" fades over decades in full sun, but it holds its look many times longer than organic mulch.

How deep should it be?

Depth depends on the use. Landscaping beds want about 2 inches. A backyard playset, which isn't government-regulated, wants 3–4 inches.

A public or commercial playground uses a certified depth set by the equipment's fall height. Under ASTM F1292, 4 inches protects a 10-foot fall, 5 inches a 12-foot fall, and 6 inches a 16-foot fall.

Seen “12 inches” quoted? The CPSC lists 9–12″ for loose fills like wood chips and sand, which compress and scatter. Rubber nuggets don't, so under ASTM F3012 they earn their rating at a shallower depth. Our Playground Safety Handbook breaks it down by use.

Buying & delivery

Ordering
How much do I need, and how do I figure it out?

Use our calculator — enter your length and width (or square footage), pick a depth, and it sizes the job to the pallet. Each pallet covers about 75 cubic feet, delivered free, curbside, to the 48 contiguous states — every state except Alaska and Hawaii.

How is it delivered, and can I install it myself?

We ship it free to the 48 contiguous states as pallets of 50 bags. Our freight carrier sets it down curbside.

Installing it is straightforward for a homeowner, facilities crew, or contractor: clear the area, lay weed fabric, set a border, and spread to depth. We deliver the product; we don't install it — but we'll walk you through every step.

Where do I buy it, and what does it cost?
