Rubber mulch in Michigan, in short

Our rubber mulch is IPEMA-certified recycled nuggets, tested to the ASTM F1292 playground-safety standard. It ships by the pallet — 75 cubic feet, freight included. Every pallet arrives curbside, typically within 5–10 business days across Michigan.

  • Play-ready: The same product works for both play areas and landscape beds, and every color is the same certified surface.
  • Built for Michigan's climate: It's made from rubber, not wood. So it won't rot like wood or feed fungus through Great Lakes humidity and freeze-thaw winters — and it holds its color for 12 years.
  • Buy right here: Pick your color — Brown, deep-redwood Red, Black, Blue, Green, or Unpainted. Then buy up to 9 pallets online, or ask us for a quote on 6 or more. All sales are final.

Certified for play

A safer landing for Michigan play areas.

Our rubber mulch nuggets are IPEMA-certified to ASTM F1292, the impact standard that measures how well a surface softens a fall. Spread it at the right depth under swings, slides, and climbers, and it gives kids a more forgiving landing than bare ground. Blue and Green are the colors parents and centers reach for most in play areas.

Michigan expects a cushioned surface under play equipment. The state's child-care licensing rule (Mich. Admin. Code R. 400.8170) requires a "shock absorbing surface" under any elevated play or climbing equipment, and keeps loose-fill surfacing off concrete and asphalt.

A cushioning loose-fill surface like rubber mulch meets that requirement. Confirm the right depth and setup for your equipment with your licensing consultant.

How deep does the mulch need to be?

Home & backyardUpdated July 2026

Where it’s goingDepthNotes
Home & backyard playsets3″Right for most home swing sets and play structures. Home playgrounds aren’t government-regulated — this is the standard recommendation.
Taller home playsets4″A little extra cushion for a taller backyard structure.
Landscaping & garden beds2″Blocks weeds and holds soil moisture — a landscaping depth, not a safety depth.

Home guidance follows the CPSC’s voluntary Home Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 324). Backyard playgrounds carry no federal depth requirement.

Certified thickness-to-fall-height ratios for the IPEMA-certified recycled-rubber nugget mulch we ship, tested to ASTM F1292-22 and F3012-22. Public playgrounds follow the U.S. CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 325). Loose fill settles when rolled, so spread about an inch over the target depth. Figures reviewed July 2026.

Why these depths look lower than the “12 inches” you may have seen: the CPSC lists a generic 9–12″ minimum for loose fills like wood chips and sand because they compress and scatter. Rubber nuggets don’t compress the same way, so under ASTM F3012 they earn a certified fall-height rating at a shallower depth.
Michigan weather, built for it

Made to last through a full Michigan year.

Michigan's weather is a moisture machine. The Great Lakes make the state "more temperate and moist than other north-central states," says the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information. Add repeated freeze-thaw winters and heavy-rain totals that keep climbing, and the ground stays wet much of the year.

That is exactly what wears out wood and bark mulch here. Damp wood feeds artillery fungus (Sphaerobolus). A four-year Penn State study found that moist wood and shredded bark-and-wood blends grow it.

The fungus shoots sticky black spores that cling to light-colored siding and cars as high as a second story, and they stain permanently. Big, dry bark resists it, but Michigan's moist mulch does not. Wet wood also rots and mats through the state's long, damp winters, so beds need topping off almost every year.

Rubber mulch can't rot like wood or host fungus, and it won't break down in freeze-thaw wet. So it keeps its cushioning and its color, backed by our 12-year color guarantee.

One honest note: in a hard downpour or high wind, any loose mulch can shift. Edging helps keep beds and fall zones right where you want them.

Recycled rubber sheds water instead of soaking it up, so it doesn’t rot down the way wood mulch does.

“The Great Lakes play an important role in moderating the state's climate, causing it to be more temperate and moist than other north-central states.”

Michigan native plants

A clean frame for Michigan’s native garden.

For Michigan landscape beds, rubber mulch makes a clean, low-maintenance border around native plantings. Michigan State University Extension recommends natives like the state tree Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) and white oak (Quercus alba). It also lists common ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) and Michigan holly, also called winterberry (Ilex verticillata).

Rubber holds a crisp edge around plants like these, year after year. It won't sink into the soil or need yearly replacement. Deep redwood Red stands out against green foliage.

Brown $709/pallet

A deep brown that looks like a fresh load of wood chips. It holds that color under a 12-year guarantee, while wood grays and washes away. It sits easily beside brick, fencing, and green lawns, and works just as well under a backyard playset.

Red $709/pallet

A warm, deep redwood tone — the color kids head straight for on a playground, with a soft landing underfoot. In a landscape bed it stands out against gray stone, brick, and greenery, and it pairs handsomely with green play sets.

Common questions

Good questions, clear answers.

How much does rubber mulch cost delivered in Michigan?

A single pallet delivered in Michigan runs for unpainted rubber mulch up to $749 for the colors, with freight already included in the price. Each pallet holds 75 cubic feet — enough for a good-sized play area or landscape bed. You can buy up to 9 pallets online at your exact Michigan delivered price; for 6 or more, ask us for a freight quote.

Does rubber mulch hold up in Michigan's climate?

Yes. The Great Lakes keep Michigan more moist than neighboring states (NOAA NCEI Michigan summary), and repeated freeze-thaw winters break wood mulch down fast. Rubber mulch can't rot like wood, mat, or grow fungus, and it won't decompose in freeze-thaw wet. So it holds its cushioning and color, backed by our 12-year color guarantee.

Is rubber mulch allowed under playground equipment at a Michigan daycare?

Yes. Mich. Admin. Code R. 400.8170 calls for a shock-absorbing surface under elevated play equipment, and keeps loose-fill surfacing off concrete and asphalt. A cushioning loose-fill surface like our IPEMA-certified (ASTM F1292) rubber mulch meets that rule. Confirm the right depth for your equipment with your licensing consultant.

Why choose rubber mulch over wood mulch in Michigan?

In Michigan's damp climate, wet wood and bark mulch feeds artillery fungus (Sphaerobolus). A four-year Penn State study found it shoots black spores that stain siding permanently, and wet wood also rots and needs yearly topping. Rubber mulch is inorganic, so it can't feed fungus, won't rot like wood in freeze-thaw wet, and holds its color for 12 years.

Does rubber mulch work with Michigan native plants?

Yes. Michigan State University Extension recommends natives like Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) and white oak (Quercus alba). It also lists common ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) and Michigan holly, or winterberry (Ilex verticillata). Rubber mulch makes a clean, low-maintenance border around plantings like these and won't sink into the soil or need yearly replacement.

Do you deliver rubber mulch across Michigan?

Yes. We deliver statewide along corridors like I-75, I-94, I-96, I-69, I-196, and US-131 across Michigan. That reaches Detroit, Grand Rapids, Warren, Sterling Heights, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Dearborn, and every address in between.
