Rubber mulch in Indiana, in short

We deliver recycled rubber mulch across Indiana for playgrounds and landscape beds. It ships by the pallet — 75 cubic feet each — on a freight truck. The driver sets your order at the curb, so you need no loading dock.

  • Built for Indiana's climate: rubber is inorganic. It can't rot, feed fungus, or turn to mush the way wood mulch does through wet, freeze-thaw winters. It holds its color for years under a 12-year guarantee.
  • Play-ready: the play-grade nuggets are IPEMA-certified to the ASTM F1292 safety-surfacing standard, so they cushion falls under swings and slides.
  • Buy right here: order up to nine pallets online at your exact Indiana price. For six or more, ask us for a freight quote. It comes in brown, red, black, unpainted, blue, and green — and all sales are final.

Certified for play

A safer landing for Indiana play areas.

For Indiana playgrounds, our rubber mulch comes as nuggets. They are IPEMA-certified to ASTM F1292, the standard that measures how well a surface softens a fall. That cushioning matters under Indiana equipment.

State child care rule 470 IAC 3-4.7-66 requires "a shock absorbing surface" under playground equipment. It must sit at the "required depth for the critical height of the equipment" and cover the full fall zone.

Rubber mulch meets that fall-zone requirement, and it stays springy for years instead of packing down like wood chips. The rule sets depth by equipment height. Before you order for a licensed daycare or preschool, confirm the exact depth and fall-zone size with your licensing consultant.

How deep does the mulch need to be?

Home & backyardUpdated July 2026

Where it’s goingDepthNotes
Home & backyard playsets3″Right for most home swing sets and play structures. Home playgrounds aren’t government-regulated — this is the standard recommendation.
Taller home playsets4″A little extra cushion for a taller backyard structure.
Landscaping & garden beds2″Blocks weeds and holds soil moisture — a landscaping depth, not a safety depth.

Home guidance follows the CPSC’s voluntary Home Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 324). Backyard playgrounds carry no federal depth requirement.

Certified thickness-to-fall-height ratios for the IPEMA-certified recycled-rubber nugget mulch we ship, tested to ASTM F1292-22 and F3012-22. Public playgrounds follow the U.S. CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 325). Loose fill settles when rolled, so spread about an inch over the target depth. Figures reviewed July 2026.

Why these depths look lower than the “12 inches” you may have seen: the CPSC lists a generic 9–12″ minimum for loose fills like wood chips and sand because they compress and scatter. Rubber nuggets don’t compress the same way, so under ASTM F3012 they earn a certified fall-height rating at a shallower depth.
Indiana weather, built for it

Made to last through a full Indiana year.

Indiana is hard on wood mulch, and the reason is the weather. The NOAA NCEI State Climate Summary for Indiana explains why.

The state sits open to "bitterly cold air masses from the Arctic in the winter." In summer come "warm, humid air masses from the Gulf of Mexico."

That means warm, wet summers, then freeze-thaw winters. Those cool, damp conditions let artillery (shotgun) fungus grow in rotting wood and bark mulch.

Penn State Extension documents what the fungus does. It shoots sticky, tar-like black spores up to 20 feet onto siding and cars, where the stains are nearly permanent. Decaying wood mulch is its favorite home, and the ground here rarely stays dry enough to keep it dormant.

Rubber mulch is inorganic. It has no wood for fungus to feed on, so there is no food source and no artillery fungus. It also shrugs off the freeze-thaw breakdown that rots wood over an Indiana winter, and it holds its color for years under our 12-year guarantee.

One honest note: no loose mulch sits glued to the ground. A hard downpour or high wind can shift any of it. But heavy rubber stays put far better than lightweight wood chips.

Indiana native plants

A clean frame for Indiana’s native garden.

Rubber mulch also makes a clean, low-upkeep frame for an Indiana native garden. Because it doesn't break down like wood, it holds a crisp border year after year. There is no yearly top-off and no fading to gray, even around plants that already thrive here.

Purdue Extension's guide, "Recommended Indiana-native Plants for Attracting Pollinators" (POL-6), points to natives that pair well with rubber. Good choices include Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis), Black Cherry (Prunus serotina), Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), and Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea). Ring any of them in brown or unpainted rubber for a tidy, weed-suppressing bed.

Common questions

Good questions, clear answers.

How much does rubber mulch cost delivered in Indiana?

A single pallet delivered in Indiana runs for unpainted rubber mulch up to $709 for the colors, with freight already included in the price. Each pallet holds 75 cubic feet — enough for a good-sized play area or landscape bed. You can buy up to 9 pallets online at your exact Indiana delivered price; for 6 or more, ask us for a freight quote.

Does rubber mulch hold up in Indiana's climate?

Yes — that is the main reason to choose it here. The NOAA NCEI State Climate Summary for Indiana describes warm, humid Gulf-fed summers and cold Arctic winters. Those wet, freeze-thaw conditions rot wood mulch and grow artillery fungus in it (Penn State Extension).

Inorganic rubber can't rot like wood or feed fungus, and it holds its color under our 12-year guarantee. Heavy rain or wind can shift any loose mulch. But rubber stays put far better than wood chips.

Is rubber mulch allowed under playground equipment at an Indiana daycare?

Indiana rule 470 IAC 3-4.7-66 requires a "shock absorbing surface" at the right depth covering the fall zone under playground equipment. Our play-grade nuggets are IPEMA-certified to ASTM F1292, the standard for measuring fall protection, which is a practical way to meet that requirement. The rule sets depth by your equipment's height, so confirm the exact depth and fall-zone size with your licensing consultant before you order.

Why choose rubber mulch over wood mulch in Indiana?

Wood mulch fails here in a specific way. Indiana's warm, humid summers and year-round rain keep it damp. That damp lets artillery (shotgun) fungus grow in it (Penn State Extension).

The fungus shoots sticky, tar-like spores up to 20 feet onto siding and cars, where the stains are nearly permanent. Wood also rots over freeze-thaw winters and needs topping off. Rubber has no wood to feed on, so there's no fungus, no rot, and no yearly re-mulching.

Does rubber mulch work with Indiana native plants?

It does. Rubber mulch makes a clean, low-maintenance border that won't break down like wood around Indiana natives.

Purdue Extension's pollinator guide (POL-6) recommends Eastern Redbud, Black Cherry, Wild Bergamot, and Purple Coneflower. All of them pair well with a tidy ring of brown or unpainted rubber that holds its edge and suppresses weeds.

Do you deliver rubber mulch across Indiana?

Yes. We deliver to the 48 contiguous states. Indiana's interstates include I-65, I-70, I-69, I-74, the I-80/I-90 Toll Road, I-94, and I-64.
