A safer landing for Massachusetts play areas.
For play areas, our rubber nuggets are IPEMA-certified to ASTM F1292. That standard measures how well a surface softens a fall — the whole job of a play surface.
Massachusetts child-care rules back this up. Rule 606 CMR 7.07(16)(e) requires an impact-absorbing surface under swings, slides, and climbing structures. It bars pea gravel and wood-chip nuggets in infant and toddler areas.
Rubber mulch meets that requirement without breaking down or thinning out the way loose wood chips do. It holds its depth and its cushion season after season. Confirm depth and use-zone details with your own licensing consultant before you install.

How deep does the mulch need to be?
Home & backyardUpdated July 2026
| Where it’s going | Depth | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Home & backyard playsets | 3″ | Right for most home swing sets and play structures. Home playgrounds aren’t government-regulated — this is the standard recommendation. |
| Taller home playsets | 4″ | A little extra cushion for a taller backyard structure. |
| Landscaping & garden beds | 2″ | Blocks weeds and holds soil moisture — a landscaping depth, not a safety depth. |
Home guidance follows the CPSC’s voluntary Home Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 324). Backyard playgrounds carry no federal depth requirement.
Schools, parks, daycares & commercial — by equipment fall heightUpdated July 2026
| Equipment fall height | Rubber mulch depth | Certified rating |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 10 ft | 4″ | Certified critical fall height: 10 ft |
| Up to 12 ft | 5″ | Certified critical fall height: 12 ft |
| Up to 16 ftCovers the tallest commercial play towers. | 6″ | Certified critical fall height: 16 ft |
Certified thickness-to-fall-height ratios for the IPEMA-certified recycled-rubber nugget mulch we ship, tested to ASTM F1292-22 and F3012-22. Public playgrounds follow the U.S. CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 325). Loose fill settles when rolled, so spread about an inch over the target depth. Figures reviewed July 2026.
Made to last through a full Massachusetts year.
Massachusetts is hard on wood mulch. NOAA describes the state as having "cold, snowy winters and warm summers" (NOAA NCEI State Climate Summary 2022 — Massachusetts).
The state sees about 45 to 55 inches of rain and snow a year. Since 1970, that total has run roughly 4.7 inches above the older baseline, in a record run of heavy-rain events. That heat and moisture keep wood and bark mulch damp for long stretches.
The honest difference: artillery ("shotgun") fungus feeds on damp, rotting wood mulch. UMass Extension's fact sheet "Fungi in Mulches and Composts" documents how it colonizes that mulch. The fungus then shoots sticky black spores onto light-colored siding, fences, and cars, where they cling and stain almost permanently.
Both UMass and Rutgers Extension note that recycled rubber and stone do not support artillery fungus. Damp wood near a foundation also draws termites and carpenter ants. It breaks down and needs replacing every year or two.
Rubber mulch never decays into that wet food source, so it cannot feed the fungus. It does not rot like wood or need yearly topping-off, and our 12-year guarantee covers its color.
One honest note: no loose mulch is weightless. A heavy downpour or high wind can move any material, rubber included. Install it at the right depth and edge your beds.

“The use zones under and around swings, slides, and climbing structures must be covered with an adequate depth of an impact absorbing material... Pea gravel and wood chip nuggets must not be used in areas used by infants and toddlers.”
— Massachusetts child-care regulation 606 CMR 7.07(16)(e)A clean frame for Massachusetts’s native garden.
Rubber mulch also frames a New England native garden cleanly, holding a crisp edge without breaking down into the bed. Planting Massachusetts natives? Start with UMass Extension's "North American Plants for New England Gardens".
Four of its picks pair well with rubber-mulched beds:
- Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) — bright berries that hold through winter.
- Sweet Pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia) — late-summer scent.
- Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) — spring color.
- Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) — year-round green.
Rubber mulch holds moisture in the soil around them. It won't compete for that moisture the way decomposing wood does.

Good questions, clear answers.
How much does rubber mulch cost delivered to Massachusetts?
A single pallet delivered in Massachusetts runs for unpainted rubber mulch up to $759 for the colors, with freight already included in the price. Each pallet holds 75 cubic feet — enough for a good-sized play area or landscape bed. You can buy up to 9 pallets online at your exact Massachusetts delivered price; for 6 or more, ask us for a freight quote.
Does rubber mulch hold up in the Massachusetts climate?
Yes. NOAA describes Massachusetts as having "cold, snowy winters and warm summers" (NOAA NCEI State Climate Summary 2022), with heavy, frequent rain. Rubber does not rot, so it survives freeze-thaw winters and warm, wet summers far longer than wood, which breaks down and needs replacing every year or two. A 12-year guarantee covers our color.
Is rubber mulch allowed under playground equipment at a Massachusetts daycare?
Massachusetts rule 606 CMR 7.07(16)(e) requires an "impact absorbing material" under swings, slides, and climbers, and bars pea gravel and wood-chip nuggets in infant and toddler areas. Our nuggets are IPEMA-certified to ASTM F1292, so they meet the impact standard. Confirm depth and use-zone details with your own licensing consultant.
Why choose rubber mulch over wood mulch in Massachusetts?
Massachusetts's warm, humid summers keep wood mulch damp — just what artillery ("shotgun") fungus needs, and damp wood also draws termites. UMass Extension's "Fungi in Mulches and Composts" documents how the fungus shoots sticky black spores onto siding and cars, where they stain near-permanently. Both UMass and Rutgers note that rubber does not support it — and rubber won't rot like wood or need yearly replacing.
Does rubber mulch work with Massachusetts native plants?
Yes. It frames New England natives cleanly and holds soil moisture without breaking down. For plant ideas, see UMass Extension's "North American Plants for New England Gardens". Its picks include Winterberry (Ilex verticillata), Sweet Pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia), Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis), and Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana).
Do you deliver across Massachusetts?
Yes. We deliver to Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Cambridge, Lowell, Brockton, Quincy, Lynn, New Bedford, Fall River, and towns statewide, plus the rest of the 48 contiguous states. Freight runs corridors like I-90, I-95, I-93, I-91, I-495, and I-84, usually arriving within 5–10 business days. Delivery is curbside, freight comes included, and all sales are final.
