Rubber mulch in Vermont, in short

Perfect Rubber Mulch delivers IPEMA-certified, ASTM F1292 recycled rubber mulch across Vermont. We sell it by the pallet — 75 cubic feet each — and the truck sets it right at your curb. Vermont is one of the 48 contiguous states we ship to.

  • Built for Vermont's climate: rubber does not rot or feed fungus, so it outlasts wood or bark in Vermont's cold, wet, freeze-thaw winters. It carries a 12-year color guarantee.
  • Play-ready: the play nuggets carry IPEMA certification to the ASTM F1292 impact standard. Under swings, slides, and climbers, they cushion the landing. The same mulch makes a crisp border in garden beds.
  • Buy right here: order up to 9 pallets online; for 6 or more, request a quote. All sales are final.

Certified for play

A safer landing for Vermont play areas.

Our rubber play nuggets carry IPEMA certification to the ASTM F1292 impact standard — the measure of how well a surface cushions a fall from play equipment. Over concrete or bare ground, a child gets no protection. A certified cushioning surface at the right depth softens the landing under swings, slides, and climbing frames.

Vermont's rules call for it. The state's Children's Day Care Licensing Regulations require absorbent "cushioning material… in sufficient depth" under any structure a child can climb "more than 30 inches" high. The same rule prohibits "grass, bare ground, asphalt and concrete… under these structures" (13-162-009, Code Vt. R.).

Rubber mulch is one absorbent surface that meets that need. Always confirm the depth and placement with your licensing consultant.

How deep does the mulch need to be?

Home & backyardUpdated July 2026

Where it’s goingDepthNotes
Home & backyard playsets3″Right for most home swing sets and play structures. Home playgrounds aren’t government-regulated — this is the standard recommendation.
Taller home playsets4″A little extra cushion for a taller backyard structure.
Landscaping & garden beds2″Blocks weeds and holds soil moisture — a landscaping depth, not a safety depth.

Home guidance follows the CPSC’s voluntary Home Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 324). Backyard playgrounds carry no federal depth requirement.

Certified thickness-to-fall-height ratios for the IPEMA-certified recycled-rubber nugget mulch we ship, tested to ASTM F1292-22 and F3012-22. Public playgrounds follow the U.S. CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 325). Loose fill settles when rolled, so spread about an inch over the target depth. Figures reviewed July 2026.

Why these depths look lower than the “12 inches” you may have seen: the CPSC lists a generic 9–12″ minimum for loose fills like wood chips and sand because they compress and scatter. Rubber nuggets don’t compress the same way, so under ASTM F3012 they earn a certified fall-height rating at a shallower depth.
Vermont weather, built for it

Made to last through a full Vermont year.

Moisture defines Vermont's weather. NOAA's climate summary describes "cold, snowy winters and pleasantly warm summers." Annual precipitation has climbed nearly 6 inches since the 1960s, and rain falls all year (NOAA NCEI Vermont State Climate Summary).

That constant wet is exactly what wears out wood and bark mulch. Damp, decomposing wood feeds artillery fungus (Sphaerobolus). It thrives in New England's cool, moist springs and falls.

From there it shoots tar-like black spores up to 20 feet onto siding, cars, and playsets, where they resist almost any cleaning. Freeze-thaw cycles also rot and heave the wood, so beds mat down and need topping up every spring (Penn State Extension).

Recycled rubber gives fungus nothing to grow on. It does not rot like wood or heave in freeze-thaw, so nothing sprouts spores and nothing needs replacing each spring. Our 12-year guarantee covers the color.

One honest note: no loose mulch is weightless. A heavy downpour or high wind can shift any surface material, so keep beds edged and topped to the depth you want.

Recycled rubber sheds water instead of soaking it up, so it doesn’t rot down the way wood mulch does.

Vermont native plants

A clean frame for Vermont’s native garden.

Rubber mulch also makes a clean, low-maintenance border for a Vermont native garden. It will not blow apart or rot down into the soil. It holds a crisp edge around plantings season after season while the plants do the work.

UVM Extension recommends Vermont natives for these beds: red maple (Acer rubrum), serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis), red-osier dogwood (Cornus sericea), and Joe Pye weed (Eutrochium purpureum). See UVM Extension, "Gardening with Native Plants." Ring them with rubber mulch in Unpainted for a natural look, or in deep-redwood Red to set the foliage off.

Common questions

Good questions, clear answers.

How much does rubber mulch cost delivered in Vermont?

A single pallet delivered in Vermont runs for unpainted rubber mulch up to $709 for the colors, with freight already included in the price. Each pallet holds 75 cubic feet — enough for a good-sized play area or landscape bed. You can buy up to 9 pallets online at your exact Vermont delivered price; for 6 or more, ask us for a freight quote.

Does rubber mulch hold up in Vermont's climate?

Yes. NOAA describes Vermont's "cold, snowy winters and pleasantly warm summers" with rising, year-round precipitation (NOAA NCEI Vermont State Climate Summary). Rubber does not rot, feed fungus, or heave in freeze-thaw the way wood does, and our 12-year guarantee backs its color.

Is rubber mulch allowed under playground equipment in Vermont?

Yes. Vermont's Children's Day Care Licensing Regulations require an absorbent cushioning material under structures over 30 inches and prohibit grass, bare ground, asphalt, and concrete (13-162-009, Code Vt. R.). Our nuggets are IPEMA-certified to ASTM F1292 — confirm the required depth with your licensing consultant.

Why choose rubber mulch over wood or bark in Vermont?

Wet, decomposing wood feeds artillery fungus (Sphaerobolus). It shoots tar-like black spores onto siding and cars in Vermont's cool, moist springs and falls (Penn State Extension). Rubber gives fungus nothing to grow on and does not rot like wood in freeze-thaw, so nothing needs replacing each spring.

Does rubber mulch work with Vermont native plants?

Yes. It makes a clean, weed-free border around the natives UVM Extension recommends: red maple, serviceberry, red-osier dogwood, and Joe Pye weed. It holds its edge without rotting into the soil (UVM Extension, "Gardening with Native Plants").

Do you deliver rubber mulch across Vermont?

Yes — to Burlington, Rutland, Brattleboro, Bennington, and towns statewide along I-89, I-91, I-93, and U.S. Routes 7 and 4. Vermont is one of the 48 contiguous states we ship to. We fold freight into the price, and orders reach the curb within 5–10 business days.
