Rubber mulch in California, in short

Perfect Rubber Mulch ships recycled rubber mulch to California for playgrounds and landscape beds. Each pallet holds 75 cubic feet. It arrives curbside, freight included, anywhere in the 48 contiguous states.

  • Built for California's climate: rubber holds its color under strong sun and stays put in dry winds. It never rots or feeds termites the way wood mulch can.
  • Play-ready: IPEMA certifies the play nuggets to ASTM F1292, so they work as a fall-cushioning surface under swings, slides, and climbing frames.
  • Buy right here: order up to 9 pallets online, or ask for a quote on 6 or more. Every color carries a 12-year color guarantee.

Certified for play

A safer landing for California play areas.

IPEMA certifies our rubber play nuggets to ASTM F1292 — the standard that measures how well a surface cushions a fall from playground equipment. Spread at the right depth, the nuggets give kids a softer landing. They hold that depth season after season instead of breaking down.

California licensed child care centers must meet Cal. Code Regs. tit. 22, § 101238.2, which states: "As a condition of licensure, the areas around and under high climbing equipment, swings, slides and other similar equipment shall be cushioned with material that absorbs falls."

Rubber mulch gives you a fall-absorbing surface that meets that rule. Always confirm the right depth and setup with your licensing consultant before you install.

How deep does the mulch need to be?

Home & backyardUpdated July 2026

Where it’s goingDepthNotes
Home & backyard playsets3″Right for most home swing sets and play structures. Home playgrounds aren’t government-regulated — this is the standard recommendation.
Taller home playsets4″A little extra cushion for a taller backyard structure.
Landscaping & garden beds2″Blocks weeds and holds soil moisture — a landscaping depth, not a safety depth.

Home guidance follows the CPSC’s voluntary Home Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 324). Backyard playgrounds carry no federal depth requirement.

Certified thickness-to-fall-height ratios for the IPEMA-certified recycled-rubber nugget mulch we ship, tested to ASTM F1292-22 and F3012-22. Public playgrounds follow the U.S. CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 325). Loose fill settles when rolled, so spread about an inch over the target depth. Figures reviewed July 2026.

Why these depths look lower than the “12 inches” you may have seen: the CPSC lists a generic 9–12″ minimum for loose fills like wood chips and sand because they compress and scatter. Rubber nuggets don’t compress the same way, so under ASTM F3012 they earn a certified fall-height rating at a shallower depth.
California weather, built for it

Made to last through a full California year.

California's climate swings between extremes. The NOAA NCEI State Climate Summary for California calls the southern deserts "some of the Nation's hottest and driest areas." Higher elevations "can experience low temperatures and heavy snowfall."

That range is hard on wood and bark mulch. Strong sun fades it, and Santa Ana and delta winds scatter the light chips.

Wood mulch also holds moisture and rots. As it sits damp against a foundation, it can draw subterranean termites. The UC Statewide IPM Program notes that these termites thrive where warm temperatures meet high soil moisture.

Damp wood mulch creates exactly those conditions next to the house. That makes stone or inert rubber the lower-risk choice near a structure.

Rubber mulch holds no moisture and gives termites nothing to eat. UV stabilizers keep it from fading, and its weight keeps it in place. That is why we stand behind the color with a 12-year guarantee.

No loose mulch stays put in a storm. Heavy rain or strong wind can move any of it, rubber included. Rubber's weight still holds it far better than lightweight wood chips.

Recycled rubber sheds water instead of soaking it up, so it doesn’t rot down the way wood mulch does.

California native plants

A clean frame for California’s native garden.

Rubber mulch makes a clean, low-maintenance border around California native plantings. UC Agriculture & Natural Resources recommends several drought-friendly natives for that kind of border.

Good choices include California poppy (Eschscholzia californica), Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia), Cleveland sage (Salvia clevelandii), and common yarrow (Achillea millefolium).

Because rubber does not break down like wood, it holds a crisp edge year after year — so the bed stays neat while your natives do the work.

Pick your color

Six colors for California play areas and yards.

Every California setting has a shade that fits — play areas, front-yard beds, and native borders. Each color reads true and holds its tone under a 12-year guarantee, season after season.

Brown $709/pallet

A deep brown that looks like a fresh load of wood chips. It holds that color under a 12-year guarantee, while wood grays and washes away. It sits easily beside brick, fencing, and green lawns, and works just as well under a backyard playset.

Red $709/pallet

A warm, deep redwood tone — the color kids head straight for on a playground, with a soft landing underfoot. In a landscape bed it stands out against gray stone, brick, and greenery, and it pairs well with green play sets.

Black $709/pallet

A deep, even black that makes garden greens and bright blooms stand out. It reads clean and modern around a porch, a walkway, or a playset, and holds that color season after season.

Blue $709/pallet

A bright blue that makes a play area part of the fun for kids. It also adds a spark to flower beds, walkways, and water features. A 12-year guarantee stands behind the color.

Green rubber mulch at a park playgroundSelect this color →

Green $709/pallet

Green keeps a play area feeling natural, blending into its surroundings. It's also a landscaper's trick for deep shade under trees, where grass won't grow — no water or sun needed.

Unpainted $559/pallet

Unpainted natural mulch keeps the raw texture of the recycled rubber, with no added color. It costs the least at $559 a pallet — and a durable play surface.

Common questions

Good questions, clear answers.

How much does rubber mulch cost delivered in California?

A single pallet delivered in California runs for unpainted up to $709 for the colors. That price already includes freight. Each pallet holds 75 cubic feet — enough for a good-sized play area or landscape bed.

You can buy up to 9 pallets online at your exact California delivered price. For 10 or more, request a freight quote.

Does rubber mulch hold up in California's climate?

Yes. The NOAA NCEI State Climate Summary for California describes deserts among the Nation's hottest and driest, with strong sun and dry winds.

UV stabilizers keep rubber mulch from fading. It never rots, and its weight keeps it in place better than lightweight wood chips. We back the color with a 12-year guarantee.

Heavy rain or strong wind can shift any loose mulch, but rubber's weight helps it hold.

Is rubber mulch allowed under playground equipment at California child care centers?

Yes. § 101238.2 requires a fall-absorbing surface around and under climbing equipment, swings, and slides at licensed child care centers. IPEMA certifies our play nuggets to ASTM F1292, the fall-cushioning standard, so they serve as that surface.

Confirm the required depth and setup with your licensing consultant before you install.

Why choose rubber mulch over wood mulch in California?

In California's hot, dry climate, wood and bark mulch fades in the sun and blows around in Santa Ana and delta winds. As it holds moisture near a foundation, it can draw subterranean termites.

The UC Statewide IPM Program notes those termites thrive where warmth meets high soil moisture — exactly what damp wood mulch creates. Rubber holds no moisture, feeds no termites, keeps its color, and stays where you put it.

Does rubber mulch work with California native plants?

Yes. It makes a clean, low-maintenance border around drought-friendly natives. UC Agriculture & Natural Resources recommends California poppy, Toyon, Cleveland sage, and common yarrow.

Because rubber does not break down like wood, the edge stays crisp year after year while your natives fill in.

Do you deliver rubber mulch across California?

Yes. We ship statewide on the main freight corridors — I-5, I-10, I-15, I-40, I-80, and I-8. That network reaches Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Sacramento, and cities across the state.
