Rubber mulch in Kansas, in short

Our recycled rubber mulch ships by the pallet — 75 cubic feet each. It arrives curbside, typically within 5–10 business days.

  • Play-ready: It works for both Kansas playgrounds and landscape beds. The play nuggets are IPEMA-certified to ASTM F1292, the national safety standard for playground surfacing. They cushion falls under swings and slides.
  • Built for Kansas's climate: Rubber does not rot like wood, feed fungus, or attract termites. It holds up through Kansas's humid eastern summers and dry, windy west far better than wood or bark. Those break down and need topping off every year.
  • Buy right here: Buy up to nine pallets online, or request a quote for six or more. Every order carries a 12-year color guarantee, and all sales are final.

Certified for play

A safer landing for Kansas play areas.

Kansas child-care rules take fall protection seriously. K.A.R. § 28-4-437(h) requires impact-absorbent surfacing in every use zone under anchored equipment over four feet high. It also bans asphalt and concrete from every use zone.

Our rubber play nuggets are IPEMA-certified to ASTM F1292 — the standard that measures how well a surface cushions a fall. They meet that impact-absorbing requirement.

Spread to the right depth for your equipment height, they give kids a softer landing than packed wood chips that thin out over the season. Before you finalize a licensed playground, confirm the surface and depth with your state licensing consultant.

How deep does the mulch need to be?

Home & backyardUpdated July 2026

Where it’s goingDepthNotes
Home & backyard playsets3″Right for most home swing sets and play structures. Home playgrounds aren’t government-regulated — this is the standard recommendation.
Taller home playsets4″A little extra cushion for a taller backyard structure.
Landscaping & garden beds2″Blocks weeds and holds soil moisture — a landscaping depth, not a safety depth.

Home guidance follows the CPSC’s voluntary Home Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 324). Backyard playgrounds carry no federal depth requirement.

Certified thickness-to-fall-height ratios for the IPEMA-certified recycled-rubber nugget mulch we ship, tested to ASTM F1292-22 and F3012-22. Public playgrounds follow the U.S. CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook (Pub. 325). Loose fill settles when rolled, so spread about an inch over the target depth. Figures reviewed July 2026.

Why these depths look lower than the “12 inches” you may have seen: the CPSC lists a generic 9–12″ minimum for loose fills like wood chips and sand because they compress and scatter. Rubber nuggets don’t compress the same way, so under ASTM F3012 they earn a certified fall-height rating at a shallower depth.
Kansas weather, built for it

Made to last through a full Kansas year.

NOAA's Kansas climate summary describes the state's split personality: "Kansas lies in the central Great Plains, straddling the transition from relatively abundant precipitation in the southeast, to semiarid conditions in the west."

That split is hard on wood and bark mulch at both ends. In the damp east, wet bark breeds artillery fungus (Sphaerobolus). It shoots sticky, tar-like spores onto siding, cars, and playsets, and they barely come off (Penn State Extension).

Moist wood also draws termites. In the dry, windy west, light wood chips sun-bleach and blow off the bed, so you re-mulch nearly every year.

Rubber mulch can't feed fungus or termites, doesn't rot like wood in freeze-thaw winters, and holds its color for years. It's heavy enough to stay put in Kansas wind, which is why we back the color with a 12-year guarantee. One honest caveat: no loose mulch is bolted down.

A hard downpour or straight-line wind can still shift any surface material, rubber included, so edge your beds and keep a sensible depth.

Recycled rubber sheds water instead of soaking it up, so it doesn’t rot down the way wood mulch does.

“Impact-absorbent surfacing material shall be installed in each use zone under and around anchored equipment over four feet in height, including climbing equipment, slides, and swings.”

Kansas native plants

A clean frame for Kansas’s native garden.

Rubber mulch also frames a Kansas native planting cleanly. Pair it with prairie staples recommended by K-State Research and Extension — little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa), and sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula). The mulch holds a crisp, low-maintenance border that still looks set by mid-summer.

Brown $709/pallet

A deep brown that looks like a fresh load of wood chips. It holds that color under a 12-year guarantee, while wood grays and washes away. It sits easily beside brick, fencing, and green lawns, and works just as well under a backyard playset.

Red $709/pallet

A warm, deep redwood tone — the color kids head straight for on a playground, with a soft landing underfoot. In a landscape bed it stands out against gray stone, brick, and greenery, and it pairs handsomely with green play sets.

Common questions

Good questions, clear answers.

What does rubber mulch cost delivered in Kansas?

A single pallet delivered in Kansas runs for unpainted rubber mulch up to $769 for the colors, with freight already included in the price. Each pallet holds 75 cubic feet — enough for a good-sized play area or landscape bed. You can buy up to 9 pallets online at your exact Kansas delivered price; for 6 or more, ask us for a freight quote.

Does rubber mulch hold up in Kansas weather?

Yes. NOAA describes Kansas as splitting from a humid southeast to a semiarid, windy west (NOAA NCEI Kansas summary), and rubber handles both ends. It doesn't rot, feed fungus, or blow away like wood chips, and it holds its color — backed by a 12-year color guarantee. Honestly, a hard downpour or straight-line wind can still move any loose mulch, so keep a good depth and edge your beds.

Is rubber mulch allowed under playground equipment at a Kansas daycare?

Yes. K.A.R. § 28-4-437(h) requires impact-absorbent surfacing under anchored equipment over four feet and bars asphalt and concrete in any use zone. Our play nuggets are IPEMA-certified to ASTM F1292, so they meet that impact-absorbing requirement. Confirm the surface and depth with your state licensing consultant before opening a licensed playground.

Why choose rubber mulch over wood mulch in Kansas?

Because wood loses at both ends of the state's climate. In the damp east, wet bark breeds artillery fungus that flings tar-like spores onto siding and cars, and moist wood draws termites (Penn State Extension). In the dry, windy west, wood chips sun-bleach and blow off the bed, forcing a yearly re-mulch.

Rubber can't feed fungus or termites, holds its color for years, and is heavy enough to stay put — so it's placed once instead of replaced every season.

Does rubber mulch work with Kansas native plants?

Yes. It pairs cleanly with prairie natives recommended by K-State Research and Extension. Little bluestem, purple coneflower, butterfly milkweed, and sideoats grama. And gives the bed a crisp, low-maintenance border that still looks set by mid-summer.

Do you deliver across Kansas?

Yes. We deliver to the 48 contiguous states, including every corner of Kansas via I-70, I-35, and I-135. That reaches Kansas City, Overland Park, Wichita, Topeka, Manhattan, Salina, and the western line. Orders arrive curbside, typically within 5–10 business days.
